Recycling to take the spotlight at show

2019-07-24 06:01

YOUNG models of Nelson Mandela Bay are looking forward to combining their runway skills with their recycling know-how in August.

The Port Elizabeth and Despatch branches of TMA Models will be hosting Mr and Miss Enviro at Emmanuel Church, in Lorraine, on August 10.

Participants are taking on the challenge of making their outfits entirely out of recycled material, and they are having a blast.

Etaiya Briscoe, a Grade 3 learner from Uitenhage, is particularly excited about the competition.

The aspiring scientist started working on her outfit months ago, but interested parties will have to attend the show to find out what she and the other contestants have up their sleeves.

Though TMA Models only offer modelling classes to girls four years and older, this is an open competition and the boys – and men – will be joining them on the runway.

Trish Basson of TMA Models said recycling was a very important cause for her and the competition was aimed at raising awareness on the topic.

“It’s very important that people start taking recycling seriously. A lot of the younger children hear about it, but they don’t understand what it’s about or why doing their part to recycle is so important,” she said.

“Even if they just start by not littering themselves, it can make a difference,” Basson said.

“That’s why I decided to challenge them to use recycled materials and make something beautiful out of them.”

No modelling experience is required to participate and all ages are welcome.

The dress code for models is formal, to be made from recyclable material, while spectators are urged to go for smart casual.

Entry is R60 for the competition, R15 for adult spectators and R10 for children under 12.

Mr and Miss Enviro will take place at Emmanuel Church in Lorraine on August 10 at 16:00.
