“I WENT to the councillor’s office and she refused to see us. We have been going to her office and the office of Andile Lungisa since early this month. Still we have received no response.”

The resident added, “These are the people we vote for in office because we believe that they will assist us and be a service to the people.

“We have called the municipality numerous times and everyday we are given a reference number. No one is assisting us. We are not safe. We are sitting in the dark, waiting for help.”

According to municipal spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki, the municipality is aware of the challenge.

“Chris Hani is an area where people will be moved to serviced sites, and where they will get all the services including electricity,” Mniki said.

The PE Express published an article on February 27 which highlighted the implementation of an innovative electrification programme to supply households with electricity. The programme has first been rolled out to the Missionvale area where 850 households were electrified by end of February.

According to the resident, the informal settlement, Chris Hani, should form part of the programme to curb the illegal electricity connections from the New Brighton area. The areas currently benefitting from the programme include Missionvale (Rholihlahla), Motherwell (Ramaphosa), KwaZakhele (e-Dongweni) and Walmer (G-West).

According to Buti, the issue has been reported to the municipality.

“I have reported this matter to the municipality’s service delivery department and am waiting for the issue to be resolved,” Buti said.

Mniki commented, “We will continue to send officials to the area to deal with illegal connections, as this is not only illegal, it is also dangerous to the community.”
