THE South African National Zakah Fund’s (SANZAF) implemented the Operation Qurbani 2019 campaign at the Muslim Movement Hall in Parkside on August 12.

Operation Qurbani is an annual SANZAF project, which commemorates the sacrifice of Nabi Ibrahim (A.S.) [Prophet Abraham] through the ritual sacrifice of Qurbani.

The project aims at meaningfully supporting some of the most under-resourced areas in South Africa and the Southern Africa region.

SANZAF allocates R15 of each Qurbani (locally and regionally) to the Masjid Waqf Fund.

The fund is aimed at providing assistance to Musjied (mosques) that are in need of building improvements and/or renovations.

SANZAF annually teams with Malawi and Mozambique to help ensure that the sacrifices entrusted to SANZAF for these countries are performed accordingly and that meat is distributed to those who need it most.

“Most Operation Qurbani beneficiaries in Southern Africa live in rural areas where they depend on subsistence farming and are exposed to extended periods of drought and chronic food insecurity, and where poverty often leads to hunger,” explained Siyamthanda Spaji, PR assistant for SANZAF.

“Across South Africa, SANZAF has arranged for sacrifices to take place at various locations in accordance with Shariah and the standards set out by the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA); SANZAF also facilitates for individuals to witness or perform their Qurbani personally with an animal of their choice,” added Spaji.

On August 12, 400 sheep were sacrificed and 100 distributed to donors who performed and shared their Qurbani with the SANZAF office in Port Elizabeth.
