THE SAPS in Humewood will be hosting an educational engagement session at the Grand Hotel in Central to educate the community on domestic violence.

This informative session will commence today at 18:00.

According to police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, violence against women, children and the elderly in the communities was a concern and needed to be addressed.

“As the guardians of public safety, the SAPS has a huge role to play in preventing, detecting and combating crimes against women and children. Therefore, domestic violence will not be treated lightly,” Janse van Rensburg said.

During the engagement session, various speakers from different departments and NGOs will focus on domestic violence issues, with the aim of equipping the community with the necessary knowledge about protection, as well as their rights.

Janse van Rensburg added, “Domestic violence mainly takes place out of the public eye and many victims are afraid to speak out or do not know the various avenues to follow to get help.”

During the session, the SAPS will highlight various aspects relating to domestic violence and a help desk will also be present to assist the community.

“Education is the most powerful weapon with which one can equip oneself in order to change one’s circumstances.

“Fighting this epidemic is everyone’s responsibility and the SAPS is urging the communities to get involved,” Janse van Rensburg said.
