NOW in its seventh year, Wheelchair Wednesday is once again proving to be a winner for the city.

By participating in the programme, businesses in Nelson Mandela Bay will once again be making it possible for 150 wheelchairs to be handed over to needy local citizens.

Week three of the initiative, steered by the Association for Persons with Disabilities (APD) in Nelson Mandela Bay, turned out a little different when the first school team entered the project.

Collegiate Girls’ High School marketing coordinator Wendy Westraadt and her colleague, Carla Grobler, facilitated a fundraising drive at the school where the Interact Society raised the R5 500 Wheelchair Wednesday entry fee.

At the starting point at SPAR The Stadium, students Mbali Titi and Jancke Blume commented that they were very nervous about the forthcoming four hours.

They also expressed their delight in being part of the life-changing experience where their efforts would ensure that a needy person received a wheelchair.

The sponsorship manager of Wheelchair Wednesday sponsors, SPAR Eastern Cape, Alan Stapelton, expressed his excitement at the new school-related angle that the project has taken.

“Involving our youth in matters of this nature can go a long way to sensitising them for the future.”

Next week Wednesday, the programme will spread its wings to SuperSPAR Jeffreys Bay where Kouga Mayor, Councillor Horatio Hendricks, Speaker Councillor Hattingh Bornman and several other councillors and officials will be spending their four hours in a wheelchair.
