Schools get the edge for the muck run

2016-03-09 06:00

THE wackiest and most bizarre fun run in the Eastern Cape returns when The Edge Muck run, sponsored by the Edge Financial Group, returns to Bushpig Adventures in Kragga Kamma on Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24.

This ultimate un-timed fun run for social adventure-enjoying families will bring back the child in you as you run, crawl, slide and roll around in the dirt.

Designed as a fun obstacle course over 5km (2km for kids 12 years and under) the Edge Muck Run is suitable for all ages and enjoyed by everyone – if you can laugh, then you are ready for it.

This year the organisers have created a fantastic schools initiative for all participating schools. Within each of the schools registered for this initiative, R1 000 cash will go to the class with the most entries. To get your school registered, email the contact details of the responsible teacher or staff member to under the subject “The Edge Muck Run schools initiative”.

Information on how your school can win R1 000 for one of your classes will be emailed to you.

Whil the event is built for laughs, the organisers are also on a serious mission to support people less fortunate than ourselves. With winter fast approaching, they appeal to all participants and spectators to start collecting unwanted clothing, bedding and blankets which they can donate, with their dirty race kit, to the event.

Organisers have teamed up with the Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth Sunrise to ensure that the unwanted items are put to best use and distributed among the needy in our community.

The public are also able to get involved with this initiative by dropping off their unwanted items into the Rotary Sunrise collection boxes at select Caltex stations in Port Elizabeth.

While open to individuals, the best way to tackle the Edge Muck Run is in teams/groups of five.

Discounted entry is offered for teams and it’s encouraged that all dress up and come to join in the Madri Gras atmosphere of the event.

No special training required, no special equipment required, just a great sense of humour and lots of fun with colleagues, friends and family.

See for further information and online registration.

Veteran Richards wins ORS swim

At the age of 51, former triple Springbok Kevin Richards turned back the hands of time on Sunday morning during the eighth round of the aQuellé Ocean Racing Series at Hobie Beach to take advantage of the absence of overall Series leader Ian Venter when he won the 1km Ocean Swim.

Once SA’s top triathlete, surf lifesaver and backstroke swimmer, Richards has steadily got back into his swimming and Sunday’s victory is a just reward for the hours which he dedicates to his coaching.

Venter and the rest of the Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics top open water swimmers were attending the SA open water swimming championships this past weekend in the Western Cape where Venter snatched the SA title in the 16-18 age group for the 3km swim.

Sunday’s winners for Round 8 were: Richards and Tracy Taverner (1km Ocean Swim); Johannes Moldan and Antonelle Saporta (2km Ocean Swim); Wayne Jones and Brigitte Melly (3km Ocean Swim); Johnny Muller and Tara Sacke (5km Beach Run); Grobbie Grobler and Belinda Niemand (5km Beach Walk).

The next round of the Series takes place on Sunday, March 20, with the finale on Sunday, April 3.

See to get your family active this summer.
