SIX Grey shottists recently represented the Eastern Cape in the Air Rifle National Championships organised by the South African Air Rifle Association (SAARA) in Durban.

The team included, Dylan Vimpany, Dieter Kapp, Jarryd Roote, Luke Dirsuwei, James Trollope and Gareth Strydom.

For the first time, Grey took part in the precision category, which consisted of the best air rifle shottists in South Africa. The shottists in this category represent South Africa at the Olympic and Commonwealth Games.

One of the competitors established a new South African record at the event, shooting 620 out of 600, this is achieved by accumulating decimal points on every perfect 10 target. In his first ever 10m precision event, Dylan Vimpany shot 566 out of 600. Likewise, Gareth Strydom shot 514.

While these are excellent results for first time shottists, they were only good enough for 18th and 19th place, in this very tough category.

The results were as follows:

  • U16 category: Gareth Strydom won silver in the 10m Olympic precision and bronze in the three position precision discipline.
  • U20 category: James Trollope won gold in the 10m sporter, and bronze in the three position sporter. Luke Dirsuwei won silver in the 10m sporter and bronze in the three position sporter. Jarryd Roote won bronze in the 10m sporter and bronze in the three position sporter.

The team also ensured that the Eastern Cape won bronze in the U20 team three position category.

All in all, Grey won 10 medals on behalf of the Eastern Cape, all thanks to the help of their coach, David Douglas-Henry for his hard work in training the boys.
