SWARTKOPS Valley United Brothers (SUBS) played to a goalless draw when they took on their neighbours, Lion City, in an ABC Motsepe League Motherwell derby at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Friday.

More than 300 spectators, who thought that the game was going to produce fireworks, saw the two sides fail to live up to their expectations. Apparently the high temperature badly affected the tempo of the game.

Luxolo Tobi could have scored Lion City’s opening goal, but unfortunately his shot went wide. Masixole Freedom Funani also could have scored, but his efforts was dealt with by SUBS goalkeeper Sivuyile Foffy Dumse.

In return, SUBS skipper Bathandwa Zondani was denied a goal by City’s goalkeeper, Phumlani Koboka, who collected the midfielder’s close- range powerful header. The battle was fought entirely in the middle field.

At times in the second half, SUBS came up strongly, but Phumelele Msila and Lizo Norushu seemed to have done their homework as the last line of defence. SUBS again could have been rewarded with a goal, but Unathi Khuzwayo’s shot was easily saved by goalkeeper Koboka.

City striker Ludwe Sonjica delivered a shot after the wing, Zukisani Benni Ngalo, laid a good pass to the striker.

In the last quarter of the game, SUBS tried very hard to turn the game around, launching attack after attack, but the game eventually ended in a goalless draw.
