PE SUNDOWNS managed to score a hard-fought 1-0 victory when they faced Motherwell Academy in their Safa Nelson Mandela Bay (NMB) SAB Regional League game at Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Saturday.

The Brazilians, as PE Sundowns are popularly called by their supporters, made things difficult for the hosts as they were forced to defend for almost the entire first half.

Motherwell goalkeeper Avela Mahambehlala stood his ground as the visitors’ strikers kept on shooting at the goals.

Sundowns broke the ice after Thulani Mini guided his side to a 1-0 lead until the 45th minute. Downs’ goalkeeper, Nyaniso Hilita, made few saves in the first half and the Motherwell strikers did not get any more goal-scoring opportunities.

Motherwell had a bright start to the second half. The home side skipper, Bulelani Nongongoma, failed to score an equalising goal for his side after Downs’ goalkeeper, Hilita, collected his weak efforts with ease.

The Brazilians could have doubled their lead, but goalkeeper Mahambehlala managed to collect Luyolo Mbema’s long-range shot.

Motherwell were supposed to have been rewarded with an equaliser, but their skilful wing Vuyolwethu Billiat Dinge’s effort went wide in the dying minutes of the game.

In another game, Young Killers played to a 1-1 draw with Young Ideas during their match which took place at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium in hot weather conditions on Sunday.

Killers registered the first goal of the match, courtesy of Steven Terblanche, early in the first half, while Ideas striker Sibahle Balo Nkosana headed home the equaliser in the halfway mark of the second half.
