The Sony Xperia E5 smartphone recently landed on my desk. I had to play around with it and then put down in words what my thoughts about the phone were.

First of all – I am a huge fan of Sony, especially their mobile devices! My previous phone was a Sony Xperia Z3 – a phone that could take photos and videos under water – how could I not be impressed? So when I heard that I would be reviewing a Sony Xperia, I was excited.

I put my current phone, an iPhone 7, away for a week, which admittedly, was very difficult to do.

In my line of work, being a digital editor, I use my phone a lot – even when I am not at the office. With my phone I can still update our social media pages and keep track of user engagement, no matter where I am. I take videos and photos with my phone when I go out on stories, because it is more compact and easy to handle (and carry). So it goes without saying that the quality of a phone’s camera is the number one deciding factor for me when I choose a phone.

The Sony Xperia E5 has a 13-megapixel rear camera and LED flash, with Auto Scene Recognition which automatically adjusts your camera settings to suit your every shot. The front camera is 5-megapixels which will ensure sharp selfies (in good light – the quality of selfies taken in darker areas came out pixelated).

I was overall impressed with the quality - when the lighting is good, but I still prefer the image quality of my iPhone 7. The Sony Xperia Z3 that I had before switching to the iPhone had a 20-megapixel rear camera.

Camera features: Geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, HDR, panorama

And we share with the same key people time and time again. With the new sharing shortcut, it is now super easy to send the photos you love to the people who matter most.

Getting to know your phone

There seemed to be some familiarity with working on the Sony Xperia E5, because I previously owned a Sony Xperia, so most of the features of the phones are similar. But for those who never owned a Sony Xperia before, there are helpful tips to guide you to get the best from your smartphone. Under the “Introduction to Xperia” app on the phone you can learn how to “transfer your stuff” (from one phone to another), “make it yours” (personalise your phone with themes and wallpaper), “keep your stuff secure”, “work with Xperia”, get to know more about the services Xperia offers and receive recommended apps for your phone.

With helpful tips based on how you interact with your phone, you get the most out of your smartphone every day – without any effort.

Overall the Sony Xperia E5 is very easy to figure out and work with.

Other features

What’s New

One of the features/apps on the Sony Xperia E5 is called “What’s New” – here you can find all the latest apps and games recommended for you to download.

There is a whole Google menu where you can launch your Gmail, Google maps, YouTube or even create spreadsheets, slides and word documents.

Stamina mode

There is nothing worse than going out and realising your phone’s battery level is low. With “Stamina mode” on the Xperia you can extend the life of the battery by enabling this feature, but it restricts the device’s performance and some functions in order to reduce the battery consumption.

There is “Stamina mode” and “Ultra Stamina mode” to choose from. This has been an absolute life saver for me in the past!

No phone is complete without some of your favourite songs and on the Sony Xperia, finding your music is real easy. You can look for a specific song under “artists”, “albums”, “songs” or even “genres”. And you can even create folders in your music library, to make it even easier to arrange your songs to specific genres or moods.

Overall there are a lot of cool features that the Sony Xperia E5 offers and the popularity of these features will differ for each individual, but the bottom line is that it really is an easy to use smartphone that should meet all your requirements and/or standards.
