THE Bridge Shopping Centre donated 150 Helping Hampers to brighten the day for cancer patients at Livingstone Hospital Oncology Unit.

This handover was the culmination of a campaign that ran in October and November in aid of cancer awareness and with the aim of offering a gesture of support to those in the Eastern Cape who are fighting the disease.

The campaign relied on the participation of the public and entailed the filling of boxes with the items on an enclosed shopping list. The boxes were available to collect from The Bridge Centre Management office through the course of October and November. The public was encouraged to collect a box, purchase all the items on one of three shopping lists, fill the box with the purchased items, write a note of encouragement to the recipient, decorate the box and drop the completed Helping Hamper back at The Bridge Shopping Centre’s Management Office.

Sonica van der Meulen, representing The Bridge Shopping Centre, said that they are grateful to the public for the support that the campaign received and they are immensely proud to be able to make a difference in the lives of the patients.

Charmelle Mitchell, a nursing sister at the Oncology Unit, said that the nursing staff is humbled by the gesture and that she is grateful for the goodwill of members of the public who donated so generously to the patients.
