RACE organisers are hoping that one of our top local athletes could be taking home the rich prize money to be won in the third 1City Marathon, which will start and finish at the City Hall on Sunday, October 28.

Last year Desmond Zibi, of Achilles Athletics Association, finished first in his 50-59 age category in a record time of 2:42:10 and Ndileka Mvakwendlu (Tinhara) was the first local woman home in 3:09:27.

Both the 42.2km marathon and relay race will start at the City Hall and follow a circular route through the streets of Walmer, Pari Park and Mount Pleasant before returning to the start.

The marathon is also an early qualifier for the 2019 Two Oceans and Comrades marathons.

Last year the visiting athletes made a clean sweep of the prize money. Ikhamva athlete Zolani Mabhongo, running only his second marathon was the overall 2017 winner in 2:24:03.

Andile Motwana (Tinarha) who was making his debut, finished second with Lucas Raseruthe (32GI EP) third. Samukeliso Moyo (Nedbank AGN) led the women home in 2:59:57. She was followed home by Bulelwa Simae (Nedbank WP) and teammate Beryl Makokha.

The Ikamva AC team, anchored by roadrunning ace, Melikhaya Frans, won the 2017 club relay in 2:14:11. Roadrunning queen Ntombesintu Mfunzi anchored the Nedbank team which won the 2017 women’s relay in 3:05:24.

The entry fee for the marathon is R120; however, EPA-registered participants 60 and over will pay R60. The temporary licence, required for the 42.2km only, is R30. Relay team fee is R160.
