YOUNG Cosmos played their socks off when they defeated the gutsy Real Madrid 1-0 during the Vodacom/WBHO Ward 4 Councillor Cup 2019 competition finals, which were played in Walmer on Sunday.

The tournament started off with a round robin system and ended in a knockout format.

Fans saw games of a high quality right from the start to the end of the tournament.

Furthermore, the supporters cheered for their sides which displayed some great football skills.

In the first semi-final, Real Madrid, who were the much-fancied side to take the honours, took Walmer Stars to cleaners when they thwarted them 3-0.

The second semi-final ended in a goalless draw, but Young Cosmos booked themselves a place in the finals after winning 4-3 on penalties over Mabayibone Strikers.

The final was the most enthralling game of the day. The soccer analysts could not predict the winner as the game was evenly balanced.

The long-awaited goal that sent the fans into raptures finally, came courtesy of Young Cosmos’s striker, Mahlubandile Bosman, who guided his side to hard-fought 1-0 victory.

Cosmos scooped the first prize of R4 000, a floating trophy and gold medals while Madrid settled for R2 500 and silver medals.

All four semi-finalists received a brand new set of kit. Real Madrid’s Simamkele Mahola received a trophy for being the player of the tournament while Cosmos’s goalkeeper, Lulamo Bayman, was voted as goalkeeper of the tournament. Match officials Lerato Mokoena and Mxolisi Mjingwana received referee and assistant referee of the tournament trophies.

Walmer Sports Forum chairperson, Zimisele Hempe, thanked the sponsors Vodacom and WBHO as well as Ward 4 Councillor Ayanda Tyokwana for hosting the event.
