NEVER in their wildest dreams would Kobus and Lynette Jacobs from Vistarus Mission Station in Sydenham have thought that their initial steps of obedience to God’s prompt to make a difference 20 years ago would grow to a work of service to the impoverished on the scale the Lord has granted.

On average, the kitchen provides 750 meals daily, and there are 305 adults with 90 children on the premises.

Nadia Jacobs, who handles the public relations for Vistarus, said that a large percentage of people who arrive at their gates also have a history of pervasive drug or other abuse.

“We do not discriminate on the basis of gender, race or religion and offer the same hope to each person who agrees to come onto the programme.

“We provide everyone who joins with their basic needs of shelter, toiletries, three meals daily, with other complementary functions to grant each the opportunity to have a new foundation built for life,” Jacobs explained.

“Our official work programme lasts three to six months, but we realise the process of rebuilding one’s life doesn’t have a simple timetable as such, while many people stay on even after their programme has finished. Our central hope is found in the Gospel of Jesus which has been the reason for many lives turned from a path of destruction to incredible hope.”
