VP soccer challenge attracts 38 teams

VICTORIA Park High School, in partnership with Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa, organised the successful 15th Powerade VP High School Soccer Challenge, which attracted 38 school teams this time around.

The schools which took part were Brebner High from Bloemfontein, George Academy from George, Academy Learning and Leadership from Durban, Robinvale Atlantis (Western Cape), Dale College from King William’s Town, Hudson Park, and the local schools were Vulumzi High, Strelitzia High, Linkside High, Lawson Brown High, Bethelsdorp High, Alexander Road High, Sanctor High, Woodridge High and the hosting school, Victoria Park High.

The tournament, which commenced with a round robin format and ended in a knockout stage, was played by U-16 boys, U-19 girls and U-19 boys.

The defending U-16 champions, George Academy, failed to defend their title as they ended the group stage without collecting any points.

Victoria Park succumbed 2-1 to Chapman in their U-16 semi-finals while Bethelsdorp registered an emphatic 3-0 win over Alexander Road. Chapman lifted the trophy after they handed Bethelsdorp a 4-0 defeat in the finals.

In the plate finals, Lawson Brown defeated Sanctor 2-0 with Arcadia overcoming Linkside 1-0 in the bowl finals.

The spectators were kept on their feet for the exciting girls’ semi-finals. Despite their 2-1 loss to Alexander Road, Brebner gave good account of themselves in their semi-finals.

The defending champions, Bethelsdorp, booked themselves a place in the finals after their 2-0 victory over Victoria Park.

Bethelsdorp defended their title following their 4-3 win on penalties over Alexander Road in the finals.

Vulumzi thwarted Lawson Brown 5-0 in the plate final, with Sanctor defeating Linkside 1-0 in the bowl final.

The defending champions, Brebner, could not defend their title.

The games were closely contested in the U-19 boys’ semi-finals.

Playing in front of the home supporters, Victoria Park edged out Bethelsdorp 2-0 while Lawson Brown earned a narrow 3-2 victory over Strelitzia in their semi-final.

The hosts were crowned as the new champions after they overcame Lawson Brown 2-1 in the finals.

Sanctor won the plate final 3-1 on penalties against Chapman.

Woodridge played their hearts out in their 1-0 loss to All Academy during their bowl finals.

VP High School tournament coordinator, Marlon Louis, thanked the school principals for allowing teams to participate in the 15th Powerade VP High School Soccer tournament.

“I would like to thank the school principals for giving their teams a green light to participate in our tournament.

“I also would like to give special thanks to sponsors Coca-Cola, African Bank, Build It, Tiso Black Star and Bay FM for making the event a success,” he said.
