HUNDREDS of roadrunners including school learners, their family members, social clubs and a wide range of community organisations are getting ready to participate in what is expected to become a major event on the Eastern Cape athletics calendar, when Vulumzi High School in Motherwell hosts the Mandela Day 5km Fun Run on July 20 at 08:00.

Addressing a media briefing, headmaster Mzimkhulu Fina said that the race would start and finish at Vulumzi High School at Motherwell NU 5.

Fina stated that his school wanted to raise funds in order to start their own fully equipped computer laboratory.

Fina said, “Vulumzi High School is embarking on a mission to be used as an agent of change in the community.

“It sees itself as a centre for community life; hence it positions itself to be adding the proper values and attitudes to the community.

“This school is seen as a beacon of hope to the community that it serves. Furthermore, the school uses sport as a tool to instil this educational project while we celebrate the month of our former president, Nelson Mandela.”

ANC Ward 59 Councillor Mazangwandile Dano stated that the fun run would be used to bridge the gap between the school and the community members. Dano appealed to community members, schools, clubs and the broader society to support the Vulumzi High School Mandela Day 5km Fun Run.

Fina revealed that the fun run was organised in accordance with Athletics South Africa and EPA rules. According to Fina, the entry fee is R20 across the board and some prizes and many lucky draws are to be won.

The entry forms are available at Brian Bands, Action Sports and The Footballer Shop.

Late entries will be available on the morning of the race.

For more information participants should contact Fina on 071 301 9411 and Dano on 073 391 3173.

Fina thanked DSRAC, NMB Traffic Department, NMBM Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, NMBM Communications Desk, Love Life, NMBM EHP, International Peace Youth Group and Envirosev for the role that they were playing in the success of the fun run.
