A REPORT in the PE Express about a water leak and the intervention of acting Nelson Mandela Bay city manager Johann Mettler led to repairs being carried out the same day that the report appeared in the newspaper.

This happened much to the surprise of Eugene Weitz, the Charlo resident who had been battling since October for the water and sanitation department to attend to the leak between Harold, Angela and Walter roads in Charlo.

Weitz said he had spotted the water leak on October 5 when he took his dogs for a walk, but thinking it had already been reported, he had taken no action.

“On October 18 I noticed that the leak had not been repaired and I immediately reported it to the municipality. On November 1, I once again reported the leak to the municipality, but they refused to give me another reference number as I had already reported it.”

According to his estimates, the leak could have caused a loss of water amounting to R66 500.

Mettler said yesterday he had intervened in the matter, but there had already been a meeting during which he had asked the metro’s executive management to lift the level of service delivery.

“It was nice that everything fell into place on the same day that the article about Mr Weitz’s battle to have the leak repaired appeared in the newspaper,” he said.

Weitz said he was very happy that the leak had been repaired and he wanted to thank everybody involved in getting the municipality to react eventually.

“It is clear that the media involvement brought about the immediate reaction,” he said.
