MAZDA certainly knows how to design good-looking cars. And one of them is the CX-3 the crossover version of the Mazda 3.

The CX-3 is also one of the 10 finalists in the prestige South African Guild of Motoring Journalists (SAGMJ)’s WesBank South African Car of the Year (COTY) competition.

The model test driven is the top of the range Mazda CX-3 2.0L Individual with automatic gearbox which retails at R355 400. The CX-3 range starts with a price tag of R277 800.

The All-New Mazda CX-3 features their KODO - Soul of Motion design language and offers the full suite of Skyactiv Technologies.

According to Mazda, Skyactiv is a series of technologies developed by Mazda which increase fuel efficiency and engine output. Skyactiv comprises new engines, transmissions, body, and chassis which also provide for a connectedness between car and driver.

The CX-3 is a compact crossover that looks like a premium product and certainly is a head-turner – and the top of the range vehicle test driven comes with 18-inch alloy wheels and daytime running lights as standard features.

Its crossover character is accentuated by twin exhausts, black mouldings, a good looking roof spoiler, and window frames with black trim.

The CX-3 is available in three specification levels starting with the Active, followed by the Dynamic and then the top of the range Individual.

And it certainly is good-looking on the inside too. It has a smart-looking interior with an upmarket design. As is the case with the Mazda 3, the dashboard is dominated by a tablet-like touchscreen display for the multimedia system – a feature which I think is extremely good on the eyes.

The display houses the music and infotainment system which can be operated with the touchscreen or with joystick type controls between the two front seats. It also displays the rear camera when the car is put into reverse.

The CX-3 has plenty of standard features such as Bluetooth, climate control, power steering, electric windows and parking sensors. The top of the range test model was also fitted with keyless entry, a start/stop button with i-stop for better fuel consumption.

Red accents with a suede look and stitched leather all add to the upmarket feel of the inside – not to mention the sunroof.

The seats for the back-seat passengers are also comfortable and spacious.

I also liked the storage spaces – with enough stowage spaces to hold keys, cellphone, access cards, remotes and of course coffee cups and water bottles.

All the CX-3 models are powered by a 2,0-litre petrol engine. The test model featured a smooth, six-speed automatic gearbox but it is also available with manual transmission in the Active and Dynamic models. The Individual model is only available with an automatic transmission.

And the Auto gearbox certainly is a bonus. The ride quality is smooth and enjoyable and dealt well with poor road conditions.

Mazda claims the CX-3 has an average fuel use of 6,1 litres every 100km but the test drive found it’s closer to 8.1 litre/100km – which was all done exclusively on the urban commute.

Specs and pricing

When designing the new CX-3, Mazda focused on those things that people regard as essential in a car. It is a combination of Mazda’s latest technology and design, maximised fuel efficiency and the latest active safety and connectivity technology.
