SOUTH African-born musician Xandi van Dijk recently visited Port Elizabeth, a city he says is close to his heart, as a member of the Signum Quartet – a German-based ensemble that is making waves on the international quartet scene.

During his visit, Xandi – who plays the viola – met up with his father, composer Peter Louis van Dijk, who lives in Port Elizabeth.

Born in Cape Town into a musical family, Xandi, started playing the violin at the age of 4, switching to viola at the age of 12 in 1990.

He won the Volkskas Bank National Youth Music Competition in 1996 (now known as the ABSA National Youth Music Competition), which was hosted in Port Elizabeth.

In the spirit of celebrating his father’s 65th birthday, the Signum Quartet performed a piece which was composed by Peter Louis van Dijk, titled Iinyembezi, at the Nelson Mandela University last week.

A regular visitor to the Bay, Xandi said he has held the city very close to his heart – the events of when he celebrated his 18th birthday and won the competition in the same week in 1996 remain among his unforgettable memories.

The quartet will also visit Stellenbosch and Cape Town to conclude their SA tour.
