THE Redhouse Rowing Club will be sending off two of their own to Zimbabwe on June 25 for the South African Junior Rowing Clubs Association tour.

Phillipa Robinson (15) and coach Aphiwe Elese (21) will join up with rowers from Cape Town, Durban, East London and Gauteng and travel to Mazowe to attend a camp and regatta supported by FISA, the international rowing federation. There they will meet up with and compete against others from all over Africa.

“Redhouse Rowing Club was formed just over a year ago and we are very proud of these two rowers who will be gaining a lot of experience and exposure to rowing outside of South Africa,” said Rosemary Brunette.

Robinson is a learner at Daniel Pienaar Technical High School in Uitenhage.

She has been rowing for four years and has won a number of medals in the u/16 age group this year.

Elese started rowing when he was 12, for another local club and moved on to be a coach at Redhouse Rowing Club.

He is also the new president of the club.

According to Brunette, he is a an excellent rower in his own right with many medals under his belt but has chosen to concentrate on coaching and running the club.

“Both are really deserving rowers, but unfortunately have to find their own funding for the tour and are still battling to get to the final amount.”

Anyone interested in rowing or who is willing to help them or the club, which is also in need of funds to keep it going, can contact Rosemary Brunette on 082 224 6661.
