1 dead, 4 injured in shooting

A 64-year-old man has died and two cousins are lucky to be alive after they were shot while standing in the yard of a Steenberg house on Wednesday 17 August.

Steenberg police spokesperson Warrant Officer John Bartlett, says police officers responded to a shooting incident at Bach Avenue. On arrival they were told that the injured had been taken to Retreat Day Hospital.

“The first victim is a 24-year-old who sustained gunshot wounds to his left arm, lower rib cage and his back. The other victim is 47-year-old who sustained gunshot wounds to his head, a deep open wound, and his back.These two are cousins,” says Bartlette.

Several shots firedThe third victim, 64-year-old Gabriel Marcus of Sonata Street, sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest.

The three men were taken to Retreat Day Hospital by private vehicle. Marcus was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

“It is alleged that four men came to the address and fired several shots at the people standing in the yard.

“The motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage and the investigation continues.”

The shooting happened at the same crime scene where an 18-year-old was shot in his left leg and right foot a day earlier, says Bartlett.

Second incidentOn Tuesday 16 August at about 20:30 police responded to a shooting complaint at the same address.

“ It is alleged that the victim was walking with friends when they were approached by two unknown man who fired several shots at them” says Bartlett.

The victim was transported to Groote Schuur Hospital for medical treatment.

“It is further alleged that the victim and his friend does not belong to a gang. The friend got away unharmed.”

The motive for the shooting is currently unknown.

Five 9mm cartridges were found on the scene.

Steenberg police are investigating a case of murder and three attempted murders.

The suspects are still at large.
