Dominica Catherine Soglanich from Fish Hoek celebrated her 105th birthday with friends and family at the Carlisle Lodge on Tuesday 27 November. Apart from two childbirths, Soglanich has only been in hospital six days in her entire life. She has two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her son Chris describes her as a kind, generous person with no resentment. “I have never heard her raise her voice, never heard her have an argument or disagreement. She is religious. She is independent financially and numerically quite brilliant, remembering telephone numbers, birth and death dates of all her family and friends. She has lived through World War I, the launch of the Model T Ford, World War II, the first computer, four different South African governments, a man on the moon, a recent recorder landing on Mars on her 105th birthday, and 10 different popes (she is Catholic),” says Chris.
