Police in the Mitchell’s Plain Cluster arrested 561 people in connection with various criminal activities last week.

According to Lansdowne police station’s commander Colonel Elize Hermanus, the execution of search warrants, drugs and liquor outlets operations, searching for wanted suspects, high density patrols and visible policing as well as stop and search operations conributed to the success.

“We arrested 561 suspects for past week from Friday 9 to Thursday 15 June. Forty-five fines for traffic violation were issued during roadblock operation to the total value of R44 800. Our police officers are visiting spaza shops mostly owned by foreign nationals to ensure safety and prevent business robberies and xenophobic attacks,” says Hermanus.

She adds that 950 visits were made to spaza shops for the week.

“Other suspects were arrested as crimes were committed ranging from house breaking, theft, theft of motor vehicle, possession of stolen property, robberies, drunken driving, murder, possession of dangerous weapon and traffic violation.

Mitchell’s Plain Cluster commander Major General Gregory Goss says that police will continue clamping down on crime and criminal activities and bring the perpetrators thereof to justice.

“The police will maintain zero tolerance approach in preventing crime and investigation of crime,” he says.
