63 arrested in one week

The Athlone police arrested 63 people for various crimes in the last week, of which 25 were drug-related.

Patrols and “stop and search” operations were done and some houses, which were identified as crime hotspots, were raided.

One roadblock yielded three arrests, with one R1500 fine being issued.

Ten car control points, which oversaw the search of 442 vehicles, saw one person arrested for the possession of tools used for breaking into houses.

The shops of ten second-hand dealers were visited.

Two tracing operations were conducted by the detective unit which led to three wanted people being arrested, while one person was arrested for allegedly stealing property.

Eight crimes against women and children were reported in the last week.

Five liquor compliance inspections were conducted. Twelve people were arrested for shoplifting, six for driving under the influence of alcohol, four for reckless driving, four for theft, two for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and one person was arrested for common assault
