The Athlone police have once again put a dent in criminal activities in the area with the arrest of 67 suspects in one week.

Sergeant AZ Norman, spokesperson of the Athlone police, says the police in the area are “constantly busy clamping down on criminals with intensive patrols, stop-and-searching of suspicious persons and regular raids on houses, especially the houses of those identified as targets contributing to the high crime rate for illegal guns, drugs, stolen goods and wanted suspects.”

Nineteen suspects were arrested for drug-related crimes the past week and eight houses, identified by the community as problematic homes, were searched for drugs.

Five people were arrested for traffic violations while one person faced the long arm of the law in connection with a stolen car that was recovered.

Four VCp’s were conducted and 290 stop-and-searches were conducted which led to the arrest of one person for the possession of stolen property.

Athlone police members visited a dealer of second-hand goods and one counterfeit goods operation was conducted. The police also visited 16 spaza shops.

Seven firearms were confiscated.

A total number of 23 crimes against women and children were reported, which led to three arrests.

Arrests were made for business burglary (1), shoplifting (3), theft out of a car (1), murder (1), malicious damage to property (1), warrant of arrest for the possession of drugs (2), dealing in counterfeit goods (1) and theft (2).
