Police in the Nyanga policing cluster arrested 328 people in various operations in the last week.

According to Manenberg police spokesperson Captain Ian Bennett, 70 drug houses were searched, resulting in 266 people being arrested.

Officers confiscated 121g heroin, 360g tik, 408 mandrax tablets and 1.1kg dagga.

Two people were arrested for the possession of firearms and ammunition. Two firearms were confiscated and sent for ballistics testing.

When 42 shebeens were searched, 5083F litres of alcohol were confiscated, with 16 people arrested.

“The impact of these arrests and confiscations was great, since the abuse of alcohol is seen as a contributor to domestic violence and the abuse of women and children. The police have committed themselves to ensuring that officers are sensitised when attending to and investigating crimes against women and children. During the 16 Days of Activism campaign various organisations partner with the police to create added awareness and to educate community members about victims’ rights and the responsibilities of the police,” says Bennett.

“During the operations, 57 crimes against women and children were reported and 33 abusers were arrested.”
