The excitement was tangible as the months of waiting had finally come to an end.

Residents of 7de Laan informal settlement in Strandfontein can now make use of their newly completed community hall.

The hall took about two months to complete.

The completed hall boasts a new building, store room, kitchen, dividable spaces for classrooms, a pergola, a playground, astroturf and a sand pit.

It will host an early childhood development centre from January next year.

On Sunday 1 November, at the official launch, people scurried around with final preparations while children buzzed about in anticipation.

The hall’s launch also saw the release of a cookbook, Real Food, Real People, created by 7de Laan community members to help raise funds for the centre.

The festivities kicked off as a marching band came parading down the road, blowing on trumpets. Children and adults danced along to the rhythm of celebration, despite the pouring rain.

Simoné Nortman, who plays Nadia on popular television soapie 7de Laan, travelled to Cape Town to celebrate with the community.

After a time of thanksgiving, the community members and guests, both locals and international visitors, feasted together on the meals prepared by local chefs whose recipes had been published in the cookbook.

The celebrations continued all afternoon as the adults lingered, enjoying each other’s company and the children delighted in their new playground.

Organisations Hope South Africa and Destiny Changers Difference Makers also contributed to the erection of the building and celebrated with the community.
