To mark its 90th anniversary, Battswood AFC in Wynberg will host an inaugural fun walk at William Herbert Sports Ground. The commemorative 5km walk, starting at 07:00 on Saturday 23 February will see participants walking through the streets of Wynberg to touch on some of the historical points. Entry costs from R30 for children and R50 for adults and are open until the day of the walk. Proceeds from the walk and any other monies raised will go towards covering the cost of the club’s financial commitments.

Mark Bredeveldt, the chairperson of the club, said this aims to educate the public about the history of the club which has been carried over since 1929, and also celebrate the period of existence, surviving against many odds “in the interest of promoting football as a vehicle to developing the youth through sport”.

He said the club was formed by the teachers and students of Battswood Training College and over time has enjoyed success in various competitions and has produced some famous sportsmen such as Bevan Fransman, Brendon Augustine and Roger Links who have represented the country as part of the South African national team in the past. Over the years, the club has managed to secure about 200 members, with most of them coming from different disadvantaged communities.

Bredeveldt said: “We encourage members of the public to acknowledge Battswood Football Club’s history, commitment and sacrifices during the anti- apartheid years by joining us for this inaugural commemorative walk. Essentially, the event is intended to allow members, family, friends and supporters of the club to share in the history through this event which will be followed by refreshments and a bite to eat that will be on sale on the day.”

According to Bredeveldt, all participants will receive a medal upon completion.
