The acrobatic gymnastics club at St Mary’s Primary School in Retreat will represent the province at a gymnastics competition in Pretoria.

The members of the club are all pupils at the school and range from Grades 3 to 7.

Their coach and a teacher at the school, Marilyn Julies, says she is really excited for the children and extremely proud of their achievements. “They take great pride in what they do and are committed to being successful. They put in many hours of practice to perfect their moves,” she says.

Julies says the pupils are looking forward to the trip and the competition, but can only go once they have raised the funds to travel to the competition. The funds required per child is R4500. “We need the assistance of the community to support the pupils. This sport is costly and we always appreciate any donations we get from the community and, once again, we are making an appeal to the community to support us,” she says.

The pupils all have several medals which they have been awarded over the years. They are looking to add more to their collection with the upcoming competition from Sunday 4 October Saturday 10 October.

Asked how they feel about the competition they all agreed that it is a learning opportunity for them as they get to meet and see other groups do their moves.

“They are determined to make a success of this trip and to bring back a couple of medals, but it is not all about winning – we encourage them to have fun. And while having fun they always perform well,” Julies says. The group was recently given new acrobat equipment by a local couple Errol and Sheila Williams who saw their need. “We truly appreciate their support and the equipment will go a long way in getting us ready for the competition and other future competitions,” she says.

Julies says that anyone who would like to support them or donate anything to the group is welcome to contact her on 071 382 7279
