A 13-year-old multitalented athlete is the People’s Post Let’s Play sport star of the month for August.

Duran Koevort, who lives in Glencairn and attends Fish Hoek Primary School, excels in rugby, hockey, cricket and cross country running.

He played for the WP u.13A team at the u.13 Craven Week in Mpumalanga in July. According to his mother Tracey, who nominated him, he is a leader on and off the field.

“He has been a captain for rugby, hockey and cricket and received certificates to prove his leadership and sportsmanship at his school.

“He has also performed well in athletics and has been awarded the junior and senior victor ludorum trophies,” Tracey says.

Duran also likes cycling and running.

“He has taken part in the junior Cape Town Cycle Tour (previously known as the Argus) many times and this year he participated in the main tour. He also takes part in fun runs like Blisters for Bread. This year he took part in the Discovery Triathlon Cape Town with his school team mates,” she says.

As an u.12 player last year, Duran had the opportunity to play first team cricket and he was vice-captain.

“He also played first team hockey. He received a certificate for best athlete and a sports merit award for cross country,” Tracey says.

Out of all these sports, Duran says rugby is his favourite. “I love it because I play it well and I can read the game. I want to be a professional rugby player one day because I would like to play at the highest level for my province and country,” he says. By the time he is in matric he would love to play for the SA schools team after winning the u.18 Craven Week with WP.

With the Rugby World Cup starting in ten days, Duran has mixed feelings about the performance of the Bokke.

“I think there is a good chance that they will win the World Cup, but also a good chance they might not because of their recent performances.”

Springbok full-back Willie le Roux is his favourite rugby player. “He reminds me of myself and we play very similar rugby.”

Duran trains four times a week. “I practise cricket and athletics in summer and hockey and rugby in winter.”
