Another train derails

2015-05-12 06:00

A second train has derailed at Glencairn in less than a month.

Rail service between Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town was closed after a train derailed at Glencairn on Wednesday last week. This followed an incident on 8 April, says Metrorail spokesperson Riana Scott.

She says a board of inquiry was convened within 48 hours after the incident. “We cannot confirm how long the investigation will take and its outcome will be released at the discretion of the board.”

A bus service has been implemented between Fish Hoek and Simon’s Town.

The reopening of the line depends on the duration of remedial work.

“Each incident is fully investigated under the auspices of the rail safety authority and mitigation or prevention measures are put in place depending on the root cause of each incident,” she says.

The cause of either accident was not available at the time of going to print.

Simon’s Town Civic Association spokesperson Merle Evertse says the two derailments in such a short time are a cause for concern.

“Rail is an important service for commuters which is not utilised enough. If upgrades were carried out, the service would be used more by residents,” she says.

Infrastructure in the area is also in need of an upgrade, Evertse says. The Association plans to engage with Metrorail on upgrades to the service and rail infrastructure
