“PNW and the other watches in the Constantia Valley have an excellent relationship with police and other law enforcement agencies. We work closely with police and on a regular basis conduct joint operations with them as well as with City of Cape Town traffic services and metro police,” Lillie says.

He says any person who resides within the PNW area can apply to become a member – register online by visiting The PNW requires a member to sign an indemnity form and to provide some personal information.

“We encourage our members to actively patrol but do realise that not all members can patrol but they can assist in other ways. We are always in need of financial assistance to fund our equipment and running costs. We have a number of members who contribute various amounts on a monthly basis and would encourage more members where possible to assist financially,” he says.

The backbone of the PNW’s operations is its radio network. It has about 40 radios. Across the nine watches that operate in the Constantia Valley there are more than 500 radios on a common network, he says. The police and various other roleplayers have access to the radio network as well.

“We share a common control room (Constantia Valley information centre) from where controllers monitor the activities of the watches and assist as needed.

“Several of the watches in the Constantia Valley are members of the Constantia Valley Watches Association which coordinates the activities of the watches,” Lillie says.

Money is being invested in a camera network consisting of licence plate recognition (LPR) technology to assist in the crime prevention activities.

“PNW currently has one LPR location and is looking to expand this. For this reason we are encouraging residents to consider making contributions towards funding of cameras and the ongoing running cost of the camera network,” Lille urges
