Taxi drivers in a local taxi association drive drug-free since drug testing is the order of the day.

Due to concerns that drivers are driving under the influence the CALTA taxi association instituted mandatory testing.

The association’s drivers operate along Caravelle and Lentegeur. Association chairperson Abdul Karriem Bassadien says it takes its passengers’ well-being to heart.

“We are concerned about our passengers’ safety. If a driver is under the influence he will put the passengers at risk and we cannot afford any accidents,” he says.

The association has forged a partnership with the Matrix centre in Tafelsig.

“We do the test and if the driver is positive we will suspend him. They are then entered into the programme and can return if they are clean,” Bassadien says.

So far more than 50 tests have been conducted. The tests are random and can be done anytime.

The initiative started two years ago and so far they are the only association ordering mandatory drug testing. The decision to do so was taken at a members’ meeting.

“When you step through our doors and apply to become a driver you are tested. If you fail you will not drive our taxis,” he says.
