Board a pirate adventure

2015-06-09 06:01

Local theatre students will bring their swashbuckling talents to the stage with a revival of the comedy The pirates of Penzance.

Presented by the Waterfront Theatre Company, the revival of the classic Gilbert and Sullivan production will run from tomorrow to Saturday.

The pirates of Penzance affords students the opportunity to work outside their contemporary comfort zones and push the limits in terms of style and scale.

The production tells the story of Frederick who, thwarted by a hard-of-hearing nursery maid, is bound to a band of pirates – but as the play opens, Frederick turns 21, bringing his indenture to an end.

Bound by duty, he is determined to rid the seas of ruffians. Once he has found himself a bride, that is.

The band of pirates put poor Frederick in a rather delicate position.

Directed by Paul Griffiths, The pirates of Penzance features a large ensemble cast with leading roles being shared by Dirk Joubert and Dean de Klerk as Frederick and Megan Spencer and Jocelyn Roskilly as Mabel Stanley.

Ryan Arnold plays the pirate king, Jules Stols and Thembilihle Benenengu appear as Ruth the nursery maid and Nathan Kruger as Major-General Stanley.

The production also features a live chamber orchestra under the musical direction of Jaco Griessel, with set design by Deon Bischoff and costumes by Delia Sainsbury, while choreographers William Jones and Shona Brabant are sure to keep your feet tapping along to the sparkling score.V

Tickets to the show at Artscape Theatre cost R120 and are available at Computicket or Artscape Dial-a-seat on 021 421 7695
