A two-year-old boy died after his family home caught alight on Saturday just after 01:25.

The boy suffered severe burns and was declared dead on the scene.

His five-year-old brother was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation.

The pair were alone at home when the fire started.

Grassy Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith says: “Members were on patrol when they were called out to a complaint of a fire in progress at Radiant Mews in Lake Road. Upon arrival at the scene members found the fire department on the scene busy breaking down the safety gate of the residence.”

According to her the fire department were notified by an uncle of the boys that they were in the house.

“After the gate was broken down the five-year-old boy was found. The two-year-old was already dead,” Kleinsmith says.

It was still unknown how the fire started
