Care house turns 40

2015-05-05 06:00

The family and friends, volunteers and supporters of the Eikehof Care House in Athlone recently celebrated its 40th anniversary with a festival in the house’s tranquil garden area. As part of the celebrations, the staff, patient residents and the community were treated to food and goods stalls, live entertainment and massage treatments, while counselling was also available.

According to Michelle Hill, coordinator, more events are planned to celebrate the care house service over 40 years to the community of the Western Cape.

She says a musical afternoon will be held on 19 April at Eikehof, as well as a breakfast on 16 May.

Eikehof is one of two care houses – the other is situated at the Tygerberg Hospital – of the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) in the Cape Metro.

Michelle says the residents at the care house are mostly treated for types of cancer associated with the head and neck.

The care house was established in 1975 and has a 23-bed capacity. It houses cancer survivors of all ages who are patients at medical centres and hospitals in the Cape Metro.

Hill says patients are usually referred to the care home if they need specialised treatment at Groote Schuur Hospital and more.

They are provided with housing, transport and three meals per day for the period of treatment.
