Heritage Day is time for carnival

2015-09-15 06:00

The 11th annual eMzantsi carnival will take place in Ocean View on Heritage Day, Thursday 24 September.

This year’s carnival theme, “It’s about time”, pays tribute to the South Peninsula’s past, present and future.

The carnival parade will set off from the Ocean View Mosque at 10:00, converging at the public viewing area on Carina Close. Local NGOs and church and youth groups will be costumed in eMzantsi’s signature recycled style and will parade to the multipurpose centre. Look out for Futurina, a giant robot girl puppet created by high school programme participants from Imhoff Waldorf and Masiphumelele Art Club.

At 11:30, the festivities kick off outside the multipurpose centre with a display by the Parafina fire-dancing troupe. There will also be food and craft stalls, a soccer tournament and indigenous games.

Inside the centre there will be an exhibition of works by world-famous painter Peter Clarke from Ocean View. The community arts stageshow at noon will feature music and dance from the Izivunguvungu Youth Band, the Quarrymen Choir, and NIA ladies from Ocean View, Kommetjie and Fish Hoek plus comedy from George Smith and Athi Duba. The show culminates in the final round of the Deep South X-factor competition with judges Emile XY?, Ernestine Deane and Dave Ledbetter.
