Cavendish mall hit by robbers ‘again’

2015-09-22 06:00

Cavendish Square in Claremont was last week Tuesday hit by armed robbers, leaving shoppers terrified.

This was the second robbery at this square this year, and was over in five minutes.

Six armed man entered Trigg Jewellers at approximately 10:45 and left in five minutes. This is also the second time the shop is being robbed. The last robbery happened in 2013 and several watches were stolen.

This time around, it is alleged that they went to the mall posed like everyday customers leaving their two cars parked outside the mall.

Cavendish Square centre manager Brenda Bibby says the police are investigating.

“All retail areas were secure and operational, and all stores were trading ,”she said. “We wish to thank our tenants, shoppers and the public for their support and cooperation. We also greatly appreciate the effective action carried out by police and Cavendish Square security personnel,” said Bibby.

Wynberg Cluster police spokeswoman Angie Latchman said six unknown males, one of whom was armed with a firearm, went to the mall and entered the jewellery store.

“They held up staff and began smashing the jewellery counters. One of the staff members managed to activate a smoke alarm with the aim of distracting the suspects.

“The suspects then removed several expensive watches before fleeing. They used two getaway vehicles which were parked outside the mall. No shots were fired.

“No arrests have been made at this stage and investigations are continuing.”
