This month marks five years since the Home from Home organisation started fundraising for vulnerable children. And since they started they haven’t taken their eyes off the ball.

To celebrate their milestone they are calling on individuals to challenge themselves by raising funds for the Cape’s vulnerable children through the “challenges for children” campaign.

Home from Home provides supported and supervised foster care for orphaned, abused, neglected and vulnerable children in small, family homes in disadvantaged communities in the Western Cape. Through continued help from donors, supporters and friends, Home from Home cares for up to 200 children in 32 homes in fifteen disadvantaged communities.

The “challenges for children” idea started as a yoga challenge which encouraged participants to practise every day for 30 days. It has now evolved into a broader initiative, inspiring individuals to push themselves out of their comfort zone to help those who are in need. Whether it is giving up a vice or committing to a healthier habit, individuals participating in this challenge month are encouraged to recognise the many challenges the children helped by Home from Home face on a daily basis.

Pippa Shaper, development director for Home from Home, says over the past five years the challenge participants have helped raise more than R300 000 for the children under their care.

“It’s also great to see many of the same participants joining us for the challenge every year,” says Shaper.

Yoga Way, a yoga and pilates studio in Newlands and the original partner of challenge month, will be offering a special rate to all participants who wish to practise at its studio this month.

The proceeds will be going to helping the vulnerable children.

Whether it is donating what you would have been spent on a vice for the month, or asking friends and family for sponsorship, Home from Home encourages individuals to take on a new challenge
