Seven years after buying property on which to build a home for intellectually challenged children, construction has started on Anchors Away Village.

The home is the dream of Fran Spencer Smith, the mother of an intellectually challenged child. The home aims to give these children a place of purpose and belonging, a place that would meet their special needs; a home from home.

However, the path has not been an easy one, Spencer Smith says, and it took many years to raise the funds to buy a property in Welcome Glen, Simon’s Town.

“Problems encountered were not only financial. Objections to such a home were also received from some people in the community. But thanks to the support and cooperation from people in Cape Town municipal planning and development management and the subcouncil, we are close to achieving our goal,” she says.

“We have been assisted by an incredible benefactor, who wishes to remain anonymous, and many others. To them we offer our heartfelt thanks.”

The home will be ready for occupation early next year.

While the opening of the home is an important milestone in the realisation of this project, it is only the beginning, Spencer Smith says.

“The costs of running such a home are high, and donations to Anchors Away Village, registered as a non-profit organisation, are always welcome.”
