Cigarette robbers arrested

2015-05-06 09:30

Four suspects involved in a British American Tobacco van robbery were nabbed with cash and goods to the value of R160 000.

The suspects held up the driver of the BAT van on Churchill Road in Plumstead on Tuesday last week at 11:40.

Warrant officer Keith Chandler, spokesperson of Diep River police, says the driver was making a delivery to a shop in Churchill Road when he was approached by three armed men.

Chandler says the driver was not accompanied by a security officer at the time of the robbery.

“The driver was forced into the vehicle and driven two roads down to an awaiting Ford Bantam bakkie where the suspects took 10 large boxes of cigarettes and cash.”

Chandler says the robbers then fled in the direction of Ottery.

However, Diep River police officers were on the scene within minutes. Members of the flying squad and dog unit soon found the fleeing vehicle and gave chase into Browns Farm in Philippi.

“All four suspects were arrested and the stolen goods and cash recovered,” he says.

Chandler confirms that no shots were fired and no-one was injured in the robbery.

A case of hijacking and armed robbery was opened at Diep River police station.

Forensics visited the scene of the robbery and recovered evidence.
