Collective close to win

2015-09-29 06:00

With only two days to go, residents of Little Mowbray and Rosebank are urged to vote for or against a special ratings area (SRA) to be established to bring better services to the areas.

Voting will finish tomorrow after two years of campaigning to have the SRA established.

As the voting is reaching the final stages it looks like residents are giving the SRA the thumbs up. The proposal also enjoys the support of the Rosebank and the Little Mowbray neighbourhood watches, as well as the Rosebank and Mowbray Civic Association.

The establishment of an SRA would enable residents to set up a Section 21 company that could take direct measures to enhance security, cleaning and social and environmental issues.

Majority decisionThe initiative is well on its way to achieving the target of 592 “Yes” votes, with 444 already received.

Support for the proposal is strong in the community – 94.6% of the votes collected so far have been “Yes” votes.

Marc Gammon, chairperson of the SRA steering committee, says they have reached the final stages of this process.

After several public meetings, the creation of a detailed business plan and a website and door-to-door canvasing by neighbourhood watch street coordinators it seems that all that’s left to do is vote.

“We urge property owners to take the trouble to register their vote.

“Having an SRA will give an opportunity for collective work as residents and we will be in a better position to provide better services. Things work better in collective and getting more votes in support of this will mean better security, amongst other things.

“We are calling on more people to vote and have their say. We are looking for a 60% majority, but getting far beyond that is much better,” says Gammon.V
