A 25-year-old man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison following an attempted murder in Manenberg.

Ashwin Ackerman has been charged with the attempted murder of a 30-year-old man in Scheldt Walk on Wednesday 19 March last year.

The 30-year-old man was standing in Scheldt Walk at 20:00, says police spokesperson Lieutenant Ian Bennett.

“Three men walked in his direction. When they seemed close enough, Ackerman pulled out a firearm and fired several shots at the victim hitting him in the left leg. He was taken to hospital for treatment and the suspects were arrested the next day,” Bennett says.

Eight cartridges were found at the scene and two men were arrested.

The three men were known to the victim.

Initially a 16-year-old boy from Stormsriver Way was also arrested.

“It seems all evidence pointed to Ackerman. He is a member of the Ghetto Gang, formerly from the Hard Livings,” Bennett says.

The suspects were charged in terms of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act (Poca).

Brigadier Andre van Dyk, station commander of the Manenberg Police Station, has committed the detectives to deliver quality investigative work ensuring that all perpetrators are processed properly and cases before court is of a high standard.

“We will continue to work tirelessly around the clock to ensure that community’s faith and trust is restored holistically within the Manenberg police precinct,” Van Dyk explains.

Ackerman was found guilty of attempted murder on Thursday 12 March in the Khayelitsha Regional Court and is serving his 18-year sentence at the Pollsmoor Prison
