Drive to register ECDs

2015-05-05 06:00

More than 46 Early Childhood Development (ECD) practitioners from 44 ECD centres in-and-around Athlone attended an ECD Registration Drive in the civic hall last week Thursday.

All the stakeholders at the meeting are affiliated to, among other, the Heideveld, Manenberg and Gugulethu community based ECD Forums.

According to councillor Suzette Little, mayoral committee member for social development and early childhood development, the aim of the drive is to help unregistered ECDs to become compliant for registration by the end of June 2015.

The drive, in partnership with the City of Cape Town, that kicked off on 11 February, includes officials hosting 26 information sessions for ECD operators across the city until 11 June.

According to Little there are currently an estimated 482 unregistered centres in Cape Town.

She says they are required by national legislation to register with the provincial Department of Social Development, by meeting the norms and standards set out in the Children’s Act No. 38 of 2005.

Another session for the ECD stakeholders and forums in Athlone, Hanover Park, Lansdowne and Manenberg will take place on 11 June.
