Erwin a natural athlete

2015-05-05 06:00

It took only two months for nine-year-old Erwin Buccholz to be awarded his provincial colours for high jump – even though he had never competed in the event before.

Erwin joined Camps Bay Primary at the beginning of the year after immigrating from the UK late last year.

His first taste of athletics was at the school’s inter-house competition in February, where he broke the high jump record with a jump of 1,20m.

He then improved this during practice before attending the Western Province Athletics Trials held in Stellenbosch earlier in the month. Here he jumped a personal best of 1,34m and took the gold medal.

At the South African Primary Schools Championships in Germiston on Friday 20 March, he ranked eighth.

Erwin is the first Camps Bay Primary pupil to be awarded his provincial colours, but the Grade 3 pupil has not let the achievement go to his head.

“I like the feeling you get on clearing the jump,” he says.

“I play soccer, rugby and tennis and I always wanted to be a professional soccer player. But maybe now I’ll become an athlete instead.”

Erwin has even set his sights on competing at the Junior Olympics when he turns 16, leaving him a few years to hone his skills.

An all-rounder, Erwin loves reading spy novels – a field he may also consider as a career if he benches his sports dreams. Erwin has been selected to represent Western Province in the SA Junior Athletics Champs in Sasolburg later this term
