Lovers of the Ghazal, one of the lighter forms of Indian classical music will be treated to a feast of stellar performances in the inaugural edition of Ehsaas - The Ghazal Festival at the Baxter Theatre on Saturday 23 May.

“Ehsaas” is an Urdu word literally translated as “feelings” or “emotions”. The ghazal is a poetic form consisting of rhyming couplets and a refrain, with each line sharing the same meter. The form of the ghazal originated in Iran in the 10th Century A.D. The ghazal travelled to India from the 12th Century onwards.

Ehsaas - The Ghazal Festival will feature a performance by the international sitar maestro and vocalist Ustad Shujaat Khan, son of the legendary sitarist Ustad Vilayat Khan. He’ll be joined on stage by Surinder Khan who hails from Punjab, India and has been trained in vocal music in the Patiala Gharana (style/tradition/school of music).

The artists will be accompanied by some of the finest performers from India on tabla, sarangi, flute, acoustic guitar, and dholak.

Tickets for the festival cost between R250 and R450 and are available at Computicket
