“It is of paramount importance that the kramats and their environs be kept clean as prayers are regularly recited there by visitors. The expression ‘Cleanliness is next to Godliness’ is very true here.”

Islam is very clear on the environment, Limbada explains.

“It is obligatory of Muslims to preserve and protect nature. This is evident from the fact that the saints buried in these kramats chose to live in the wilderness in harmony with nature as opposed to living in villages and towns. Therefore, illegal dumping of litter anywhere is sacrilegious and should be condemned as such,” he says.

The society is made up of volunteers, who look after kramats across the province. They are stretched to their limits, Limbada says, making caring for sites plagued by vagrancy a challenge.

However, the City of Cape Town will be stepping in to clean up the area in the interim, Schaffer says.
