Denzil van Graan, principal of Perivale Primary School, which is situated opposite the proposed scrapyard site, says he has major concerns in regards to the scrapyard being built across from the school.

“As principal of Perivale Primary School I am concerned about the negative outcomes a scrapyard opposite our school will have as I have seen the state and activities around a similar venture in Retreat.

“The school governing body opposes the establishment of a scrapyard on its doorstep,” Van Graan says.

He adds he has concerns about the safety of his pupils and the scrapyard being in the middle of two feuding gangs which raises the risk of heightened crime activity.

“I worry about the negative environmental impact (with regard to dirt, filth, noise and smoke that establishments of this nature cause) on the health and well-being of learners, staff and the parent community. Furthermore, the increase in loitering on the school corner and movement of scrap collectors to and from the proposed scrapyard will put the safety of the school population at risk.

“We’ve had incidents of shooting, gang violence and robberies in the vicinity of the school in the past.

“The proposed scrapyard is situated in the middle of two feuding gangs and if we have scrap collectors from these two areas coming to the scrapyard, I foresee an increase in criminal activity and the consequences thereof can be detrimental,” Van Graan says.
