Fisherman’s unflushable

The Fisherman’s Toilets in Fish Hoek have been closed following severe vandalism.

The toilets were burgled earlier in the month, with all of the brass fittings and flush masters removed, so that the facility is currently unusable, says Xanthea Limberg, acting mayoral committee member for community services and special projects.

An emergency insurance claim has been submitted and approved, and the repairs are expected to be completed in the first week of August, she says.

Repairs are estimated at R15 000.

Beach visitors will be accommodated at the toilets on the grass, says subcouncil 19 chairperson Felicity Purchase, and law enforcement officials have been requested to be sensitive to this.

The Fisherman’s Toilets are opened at 07:00 in the morning and closed at 19:00 in order to accommodate dog walkers and surfers on the beach, Limberg says.

“Hourly visits are conducted by staff to ensure that the toilets are in working order. We are requesting assistance from City law enforcement to help deter future vandalism and theft. We ask that if residents notice any suspicious behaviour, they report this to the local police immediately,” she says
