The Bridgetown Theatre Company in Athlone will be hosting a free pre-Freedom Day concert in the forecourt of the Nyanga Junction shopping mall on Saturday at 12:00.

The show gives a platform to upcoming performing artists in the Athlone area.

The show will be hosted by the multi-talented comedian, poet and actress Yandiswa Jindela from Gugulethu, who starred in the television film Determined.

One of the many artists to perform is singer Melissa Johannisen from Bonteheuwel, who has her roots in gospel music.

Starting off the programme will be the children’s singing group The Little Lunatics from Manenberg. This talented group consists of ten girls and boys between the ages of seven and 12 years. They perform their own brand of Randamp;B, soul and ghoema music.

According to the organisers these youngsters use the stage as an escape from the harsh realities of their young lives. They simultaneously send a positive message to all youth that your circumstances don’t determine who or what you become – it is up to the individual.

Among other artists to perform are singer Angel D, Aphrodite belly dancers from Rylands, the Royal Queens line-dancing group, band Epiphany from Bridgetown, Emile Petersen and Jaydine Ross, a hip-hop dance duo from Bridgetown and Langa-based rap group The Immortals.

Entry to the show is free.
